A NEW HOME FOR SUNCOAST SQUARES - Starting January 1, Suncoast Squares will be dancing at a new location. We will continue dancing at the Garden Club this Thursday, but, starting January 4, we will dance at Allendale UMC, 3803 Haines Road N, Saint Petersburg 33703. The main parking lot is behind the sanctuary building and the door we enter is located there. We'll have signs up to direct you to the dancing. (For most of you, your phone will be able to get you to the new location). A picture of the canopy over the entrance we'll be using is below.  

Please note that we don't have access to our dancing room on Monday evenings until 6:30. Another group uses the room until 6:30, so plan to wait outside the room with us if you arrive early.

 

SPLASH - Our next SPLASH (swimming and pot-luck) will be at Judy's place on April 7, from 1:00 until 3;30. Make sure to put this on your calendar.

RICHARD ISAACS is performing in a play, "Don't Dress for Dinner", at St. Petersburg City Theatre, March 15-24. Tickets are available on the website. If you would like to attend as a group, we'll select a date and share it in a future email. More information regarding this event is included in the pictures at the end of the email.

 

THE 2023 IAGSDC (International Association of Gay Square Dance Clubs) - This coming year's Annual Convention will be held much closer to us, in Durham, North Carolina. Several of us have already registered. Please consider attending and talk to anyone who attended a convention previously for information about the event. And make hotel reservations soon. There are multiple hotel options. The dancing will be in the Civic Center

INTRO/REVIEW/WARM UP - The review sessions will be held on Monday from 6:35 to 7:05. Joey will be leading this session. This is a chance to review calls at a slower pace before the regular lesson starts at 7:00. All new dancers are encouraged to attend, and angels are appreciated. Joey will try to help you review before the regular dancing begins.

MONDAY EVENING - We'll begin lessons for students and work in a bit of dancing with the lessons, from 7:05 to 8:30 pm. This is a great chance to meet the new dancers and make them feel welcome.

MAINSTREAM/PLUS

From 8:30 until 9:30. We'll continue lessons and dancing for Mainstream/Plus.

  

DANCING THIS THURSDAY: ADVANCED AND C-1 - Classes for new C-1 and Advanced dancers this week. If you know most advanced calls and want to try C-1, this is your chance. And if you know most Plus calls and want to try Advanced, this is your chance. The Intro to C-1 workshop is from 6:30 to 7:30 and Intro to Advanced workshop/dancing is from 7:35 until 9:00, or as long as we last. Mike Shagina will be calling.

RESOURCES TO LEARN OR REVIEW SQUARE DANCE CALLS - For those of you who wish to review calls or get a head start on learning new calls, there are links to a couple of teaching websites on the Suncoast Squares website: Go to suncoastsquares.com and look for the ribbon menu on the top of the page. Select "More" on the right, and then select "Resources".

 

Links to two different websites may be helpful to you:

Taminations - the calls are listed and then illustrated by little emojis. Chose "SSD" if you are in the new class, or chose the appropriate level for other calls.

Saddlebrook Squares - There are lessons systematically going through the calls. The calls are illustrated by traditional square dancers, which makes the "girls" and "boys" more easily identified than they are in our club (smile). Find the square dance lessons in the middle of the page and look for Mainstream if you are in our new class (This is the SSD level we are learning plus a few more calls). You should be able to find all the calls that we have learned.

FRIDAY WALK

A small group of Suncoast Squares meets at Lake Seminole Park on Fridays at 11:30 for a walk and then a picnic (bring your own food). We meet at Pavilion 9. Contact Alan or Sue if you have questions about this activity. We will meet for the walk in the park this Friday.
